I’ve just bought a Belkin Pre-N router and run two laptops off it wirelessly. No problem. The probem arises, though, with a WIRED connection that I have additionally made to another desktop. This computer won’t play! The LAN connection icon complains that it has ‘limited or no connection’. I use XP on all computers. Can anyone help please?

Hopefully you’ve resolved this by now, but if you click on the “limited or no connection” notice to bring up the connection status, what do you see?

If it shows no IP address or an IP starting with 169, there might be some very basic fault with your connection: a bad cable, or a bad port in your router. Switch cables or ports to see if that helps.

Let me know if you have any other questions or difficulties. I’ve subscribed to this thread, so if you post anything I should know immediately and will be able to respond quickly.

Thanks for this. It was a cable problem. A month ago my router was knocked out by a lightning storm. I replaced the router (under guarantee) but didn’t suspect damage to the cable. I now use a surge protector! Thanks for your help. Greatly appreciated.

I have a motorola surfboard modem running my internet connection. I recently bought a router, Linksys Wireless-G model, and wanted to get it set up for another computer in my house to run wirelessly using the router. My modem is currently running off the USB connection because for whatever reason it will not let me set it up using the Ethernet connection. The router only uses an ethernet connection. I had the wireless modem working at one point but moved my computer to a different location in my house and am unable to get it working again. I have uninstalled both modem and router and reinstalled them both and can’t get it to recognize the router. Any ideas?
